How Much Does it Cost to Install a Pool?

The cost to install a pool can vary greatly depending on the size and type of pool you choose, your choice of materials and equipment, plus any extra features you wish to include. Then you need to consider the ongoing maintenance costs of owning a pool. Let’s break these down so you can get a better idea of what to expect when it comes to putting in a pool.

Size and Type of Pool

We install three types of pools: in-ground, on-ground, and above-ground:

In-Ground Pools

Starting at $55,000
  • Built into the ground
  • Usually made of concrete

On-Ground Pools

Starting at $28,000
  • More shallow than in-ground
  • Still use concrete or sand base

Above-Ground Pools

Starting at $12,000
  • Uniform depth
  • Sits entirely on top of the soil

For an in-ground or on-ground pool, the excavation, frame and shell are the most expensive costs. Typically on-ground pools cost less than in-ground pools because they take less time and resources to install.

The installation of an above-ground pool is usually cheaper because it is easier to assemble with no excavation required and minimal framing. And they offer minimal customization options to drive up the price.

The final price depends on the features you add to the pool and the size of the pool you wish to build. The cost of a pool normally increases by $2000 – $3000 for each size. However, the depth of the pool will not normally influence the price significantly.

Don't Know Where To Begin?

First, you need to determine what is important to you as part of your backyard experience.

Then you can begin to establish a budget.

Pool Installation Costs

Basic installation costs include excavation of the site where you plan to build the pool, the frame and shell of the pool, the liner, the pump and filter system, and of course the water to fill it.  And you must consider the labour, equipment, and material costs required for all of these elements.

Excavation:

The cost of excavation will depend on the size of the pool and the soil conditions which can vary significantly. We must consider things like tree roots and slopes or hills that may affect drainage. While this expense primarily applies to in-ground and on-ground pools, some levelling may be required for above-ground pool installation.

Then you need to determine the equipment required based on the access available. Cracknell Pools specializes in solving tight access issues. We can dig your pool with as little as 42” wide access as opposed to the standard 90” without increasing the price.

If fencing needs to be temporarily adjusted, we are also fencing experts. Being a one-stop shop helps keep costs under control.

Frame and Shell:

Again, the cost to install a pool depends on the options you choose. In-ground and on-ground pools made of concrete are great for custom shapes and provide the most durability. And they have a variety of options to choose from for the lining.

Fibreglass pools are another option for quick installations with low maintenance but are limited in size and shapes available. Both in-ground and above-ground pools can be fibreglass. These arrive as one large piece to be positioned in place. Access is definitely a consideration for this choice.

Liner:

You can line a concrete in-ground or on-ground pool with decorative concrete, tile, stone or other aggregate finishes. While these tend to stand up better to moisture and pool chemicals, they are more difficult to repair if necessary.

To save money, choose a vinyl liner for the waterproof barrier of a concrete pool. These come in a variety of colours and patterns. While they can deteriorate more quickly over time, liner replacements are a simple option to extend the life of the pool. An above-ground pool will also require a liner to cover the fibreglass walls and floor.

Water Delivery:

Running the hose to fill up your pool is handy to replace evaporated water or top it up at the beginning of a new season. However, when you first install a pool, we recommend water delivery. The cost of water will depend on the size and depth of your swimming pool.

Basic Pool Elements

The basic features of a swimming pool in addition to the installation costs listed above consist of pumps, filters, and heaters for water maintenance and temperature, stairs or ladders for easy access to the pool, perhaps some lighting, and some sort of pool deck to surround the pool.

Pumps:

A pump keeps the water in your pool moving and equipment functioning properly. While the majority of decisions made when building a pool are permanent until a renovation, the equipment can be changed and upgraded down the road if budget is an issue.

A single-speed pump does the job and may have the lowest upfront cost but it is more expensive to operate.  A two-speed pool pump requires a separate device to automate between high and low speeds but reduces energy usage when running at a lower speed.

We recommend a variable speed pump which automatically adjusts for the task they perform. These intelligent pumps offer dramatic energy savings. You will save the cost of this upgrade in the first two years through reduced electricity bills.

Filters:

To keep the pool water clean, you need a filtration system to filter out dirt, debris, and bacteria. And as you may have guessed, you have choices which influence how much it will cost to install a pool.

Sand filters, the most affordable choice, also require the lowest effort to maintain. However, some find these the least effective type of pool filter. Cartridge filters can screen out smaller particles than sand but are slightly more expensive and you need to clean and change the filter adding to maintenance tasks.

Heaters:

Depending on the type of pool you have and your climate, you may want to consider investing in a pool heater. Gas heaters heat your pool quickly but cost more upfront and they require maintenance and higher utility costs.

Alternatively, you can heat your pool with a solar heater to eliminate utility costs. They cost less upfront and to operate but you can’t adjust the temperature and only heat the pool when the sun is out.

Sanitization:

To keep your pool clean and safe, you must sanitize your pool. You can choose from chlorine, salt, or UV. Each method offers its own pros and cons and will depend on how much you use your pool, the weather, and other factors. We will address all this in a later article.

Stairs:

Standard stairs for in-ground and on-ground swimming pools are made of fiberglass. You can upgrade to vinyl overlap stairs. We arrange to have all seams welded for perfect fit and wrinkle-free stairs. Another option becoming more popular is to install benches along the edge for seating.

Alternatively, you can heat your pool with a solar heater to eliminate utility costs. They cost less upfront and to operate but you can’t adjust the temperature and only heat the pool when the sun is out.

Lighting:

Installing lights along the perimeter of the pool can create a dramatic and beautiful effect. You have virtually unlimited choices for style, colour, and even quantity. We recommend you consider lighting because you can’t change your mind and install it after the pool is complete.

Covers:

You may also want to invest in a pool cover for safety reasons, to keep the water warm in colder temperatures, and prevent debris from entering the pool. Again, you have many options to choose from including solar, mesh, and bag covers.  You can even select automatic pool covers!

Pool Decks:

To get the most out of your backyard pool, you will want to surround it with some sort of pool deck. For above-ground pools, this usually means a raised wooden deck and fence. Cracknell Pools is the obvious choice for this type of project with our construction expertise.

For in-ground and on-ground pools, you have more options including traditional concrete or stamped concrete patios, stones, wood or composite decking. You want to consider something slip-factor, heat retention, and of course the look you prefer when making these choices. We do it all!

Additional Features

No matter what type or size of pool you choose, it can be enhanced with extras like a pool shed or pool house and maybe a fence. Then you need to consider accessories to add to the enjoyment of your pool and added aesthetics.

A pool shed is a great way to store pool supplies and equipment like skimmers and cleaning tools. A larger pool house can offer shade when you’re not swimming, a place to change or even use the bathroom if you include plumbing and want a more luxurious poolside experience.

If your yard isn’t fenced, you need to build one and may even consider an additional fence directly around the pool for safety. Cracknell Pools, your one-stop shop, provide exquisite design and quality construction for many backyard structures.

Ladders are a must if your pool is too deep to access with steps. Diving boards and slides can turn your pool into a backyard playground and add a whole lot of fun for kids and adults alike. You may wish to consider adding a fountain to your pool for a truly eye-catching focal point or perhaps you dream of swim-up bars, tanning shelves, and hot tubs. The only limitation is your budget.

Ongoing Pool Maintenance

When it comes to owning a pool, there are more costs associated with it than just the initial installation cost. You need to be aware of a variety of ongoing maintenance costs including chemicals, water testing, utilities, and seasonal maintenance.

Chemicals:

Depending on how you choose to sanitize your pool, you need to budget for the materials for ongoing treatment of your water. This includes chlorine, salt, and a variety of other chemicals depending on the environment and use of your pool.

Water Testing:

To ensure your water remains safe, water testing is essential for any pool owner. While most testing kits are fairly inexpensive and easy to use, you may want to consider having a professional come in periodically to test the quality of your water.

Utilities:

Heating costs will also play a part in the cost of owning a pool if you opted for a pool heater. This can add to the overall cost of ownership for a pool, with prices ranging from a few hundred to several thousand dollars. Additional utility costs include hydro for the pump and lights and of course water.

Seasonal Maintenance:

Opening and closing your pool each season can also be expensive. You can do this task yourself but it requires additional chemicals and time. We offer reasonable prices to open and close your pool which includes a general inspection for necessary repairs saving expenses down the road.

Conclusion

Installing a swimming pool can be a significant investment. To determine the cost to install a pool, consider the size and type of pool you want, as well as installation costs, basic features, extra features and ongoing maintenance costs. Then weigh the cost against the many hours of fun and relaxation you get in return.
